So, you have a beautiful new deck, what now you ask? We have put together some top tips to ensure you get the most out of your decking. Summer is soon on the horizon, so it’s time to get your outdoor space looking tip top.

The maintenance you need to carry out will of course depend on the style of decking you have opted for, with Composite and PVC decking needing very little attention. A classic timber deck does require some attention to keep it at its best and investing your time can add many years onto its lifespan. We’ve put together some pointers for you to make sure you get the most from your outdoor space.

TIMBER DECKING

We stick to two main principles:

One of the quickest ways to refresh your timber deck is to give it a good clean:

• We recommend cleaning your timber deck twice a year. This will ensure a safe and long-lasting structure and ensure you get the most from your decking. Perhaps in the Spring to be ready to enjoy the summertime, and in autumn to prepare it for the winter months.
• First, give the area a good brush to sweep away any debris. Then, using a pressure washer, thoroughly clean your deck of all debris or loose material - taking extra care if cleaning between grooves. If you are using a high-powered pressure washer, set the pressure to minimum and don’t put the lance too close to your deck surface. Leave it to dry out for at least 24 hours.

Apply a sealer / stain or oil to your timber deck at least once a year:

In intense sunshine, avoid applying any sealer / staining or oil product to your timber deck to ensure it doesn’t dry too quickly and the wood absorbs the product fully. Similarly, watch the weather forecast to avoid any wet weather for 48 hours whilst it fully dries and absorbs.

• If treating Softwood timber, you can use a clear sealer which is typically a transparent coat that forms a clear film on the surface of your deck , all the while maintaining the wood’s natural finish. By penetrating the wood, the sealer creates a protective layer and locks out moisture.
• Alternatively you can apply a deck staining solution, bear in mind this will add pigment and cover the natural beauty of the wood, but it’s a great option if you want to alter the appearance and colour of your deck to suit the look you desire as the years go on.
• If you are treating Hardwood timber, hardwood generally responds better to an oil product. This will enhance the natural colour. Without treating your hardwood deck, it will over time fade to its natural silver or grey colour, which a lot of people do prefer. It is worth noting however if you want to maximise the lifespan and overall quality of your deck, applying an oil treatment is worth doing.

COMPOSITE AND PVC DECKING

Well great news, Composite and PVC decking doesn’t require any painting or staining. Aside from a clean it’s pretty maintenance free!

Here are some top tips when cleaning your deck:

• It goes without saying that a sweep here and there will keep it looking tidy. Always try and ensure gaps are cleared, so rainwater can drain properly.
• Aim to clean your deck twice a year, a good time being in the spring and autumn, keeping your decking looking great for summer and prepared for the winter.
• Use a garden hose - We generally don’t recommend using a pressure washer on composite or PVC decking because the materials can be softer than standard timber. If you must use one, ensure its at least 30cm away from the surface and on its lowest pressure setting.
• Wash down your deck using warm soapy water and a soft bristle brush to clean the decking of any dirt that may have built up. Always brush in the direction of the boards, then rinse the decking after you have washed it to ensure you have no unwanted watermarks.
• If using a cleaning product make sure it does not contain bleach in its ingredients, this can damage the decking material so choose a non-toxic based cleaner.
