RECESSED DECKING LIGHTING

These are the most widely used and are fitted flush to the surface of your decking.

Recessed decking lights work well because they do not require constant cleaning and they are fully protected from the outdoor weather. We tend to use low voltage mains operated lights. The cables go under the decking and back to the main power supply. These tend to give off a brighter light than solar powered lights, however they are available in solar power (bear in mind solar lights may be considerably dimmer than low voltage if your lights are placed in any shaded areas and in the dark winter months).

There are a large variety of low voltage recessed lighting options. To create a lighting pattern, start by positioning your recessed lighting near the corners of a deck. Place deck lights near each balustrade or pergola post then ensure a regular pattern is formed. Lighting on stairs give a subtle attractive look and ensure a clear view on those darker nights.

You can frame a table location or mark a walkway. If you have an outdoor BBQ area, consider some lighting under the workspaces. If your decking has any sort of overhead protection, or you have a pergola or something similar, you could consider adding some recessed lighting into this.

 

OUTDOOR STRING / FAIRY LIGHTS

In your decking plans do you have a balustrade, handrail, pergola or structure running over or alongside your decking? If not, then perhaps a fence or small tree or hedge is somewhere to consider placing these lights? Outdoor string lighting is a great idea to illuminate your decking from above, creating a relaxing and cosy feel for those warm summer evenings. LANTERN DECKING LIGHTS

An easy way to create extra ambience

Lanterns are another easy way to create extra ambience in your outdoor area. They are fast, low budget ways to create more control over how much light you use.  Using solar powered or battery-operated light bulbs, you can move these around to find the perfect amount of added lighting for your decked area.

 

WALL LIGHTS

Another easy option is to add LED lights or strip lighting to the rear wall of the property. These are normally easier to install and can be connected to your existing electrical supply.
