The first question often asked; Does my deck require planning permission?

Generally no, planning permission is very rarely needed when constructing a decking area. You only need planning permission for decking that is going to be raised more than 30cm (1ft) from the ground or a deck that covers more than 50% of your property. If this is the case, consult your local planning office / council for information on how to apply and carefully consider how your raised decking will be fully supported.

Can I have a large deck area?

Of course! Generally, a deck is wider than it is deep. The longer length dimension will run along-side the property. With larger decks, we recommend perhaps considering a multi-level design to designate each area for different purposes. Aesthetically pleasing to the eye, it also looks great. Decking stairs can be used to easily access a raised or lower level of decking. We would recommend skirting be fitted to any multi-level areas to provide the best finish.

What size deck area should I have?

Scale your project appropriately to the size of the property or building when deciding on the size of your deck, making sure the area will be large enough to suit all your needs. Size can also be decided upon your budget. Oh that, you say. Indeed, your budget will be a key factor to determine your area size. If your budget is small, consider a smaller sized deck. You could for instance consider adding a small deck next to a slabbed patio area, or just a small decked area as an addition to your garden. Larger budget? Think of larger decking designs, you get the pattern here.

The shape of your deck can be decided upon the shape of the property it extends from. Follow the general architecture and lines of the property so it appears to be a seamless extension of the building, flowing from indoors to outdoors.

Will my decking be positioned in the sun?

Ask yourself what you will mainly use your decked area for. For example, if it is mainly for BBQ’s in the mid to late afternoon and evenings, consider what part of that area gets the sun at those times of day. Always ensure it will get maximum sun during the hours you are most likely to enjoy the area. If the area is large, you could consider an overhead shaded design to partly shade an area if you desire.  

Will there be easy access from my new decked area to the entrance of the property or building it adorns?

Always ensure when planning your decked area that you have easy and accessible access to the property. If you plan a spa area, think about any dashes in and out of the hot tub on those warm summer evenings!

What decking materials should I choose?

Every person is different when it comes to choosing your decking materials, so its important you understand the difference. Using timber does means more attention to its maintenance and up-keep but may be preferable if you love the authenticity of real wood. Hardwood or pressure treated softwood are both great choices for a deck, but you may want to opt for more modern alternatives such as composite or PVC decking boards, which are anti-slip and maintenance free.

Do I have the best view from my new decking area?

Consider the view your deck will face after its constructed. If you are fortunate enough to have a scenic view, ensure you get the best of it from your decking area! If your decking is for a residential property, consider your neighbours and how your new planned area may affect not just their privacy, but your own!

The following pointers are not essential, and many people require a simple but effective decking area which stands alone looking clean and smart. And why not! However, if you want to consider any of the following its important you factor these into your planning, so you do not go over budget.

• A fire pit – this can add an instant warm ambience.
• Are you considering a built in BBQ / cooking area?
• Should you include a seating area, do you require integrated seating?
• Will you purchase any outdoor heaters? If you are likely to use the outdoor area in colder months, this would be a good idea to consider.
• If you have a particularly windy area, you may consider purchasing a wind screen.
• Consider electrical systems for any lighting or music to be safely implemented. Is lighting a part of your project?
